Need Opinions 6.8 12" SBR for Hogs

Hey guys I've been hunting hogs with a Six8 and TSX or TTSX for about 8 years, once a year trips to Texas. My setup for the last few years has been 12" SBR with Wilson Combat barrel. I've been loading my own 95gr TTSX and they work pretty damn good on perfect neck shots.

With the advent of the Cavity Back Bullets 95gr and 105gr for the Six8 (6.8) and the huge success of the 120gr SST , I'm debating with changing my bullet choice for a hog trip at the end of the month.
Options
95gr TTSX - currently
105gr MKZ CBB
95gr MKZ CBB
120gr SST

I watched all of TexasLawman's YouTube videos and he seems to like the 120gr SST for the SBR's the best. It seems to carry the magic payload for enough shock to kill faster than the 105gr MKZ by Cavity Back Bullets.

I am a huge fan of the all copper projectile so I thought the 95gr or 105gr MKZ would be the better choice but apparently I am wrong.

Can some 6.8 SBR shooters chime in with their experience on these projectiles and give me your opinions please? I need to order my bullets today or tomorrow.

Thanks!

I’ve run a 12.5” 6.8 on hogs for many years and I’ve pretty much reloaded the whole time. I started with Barnes 85gr TSX and had really good success. I then switched to the Barnes 95 TTSX and while they are good I feel the 85 TSX was better. The TTSX likes hitting something solid in order to correctly open up. Close to a year ago I switched to the 105 MKZ and they have performed extremely well and I will be sticking with them.

I like the little lighter projectiles in the 12.5” because of the velocity loss due to the shorter barrel.

I killed a bunch of the bigger hogs with my 10.5" 6.8 1:10 twist shooting the Hornady 120gr SST's. Including a 277 and 266 pounder.
Both shots were at <75yds and I put the bullets into the heart lung area. The hogs generally go 50yds max.
I believe that the faster twist rates will help this bullet open up at the slower speeds.
I am currently shooting a 85gr TSX load at just under 3100fps from my Bison 18". This bullet hits hard and unlike the SST . . . will stay together. ---- pruhdlr

Yeah I shoot that screamer too, out of my 18" MK12 Mod 1 SPR clone in six8.

Great feedback thanks! What type of kills are you getting with the 105 MKZ's?
Usual distances 50,80,100,100+?
DRT or 50 yd run?

Thanks

Most of my shots are 50 to 75 yds but so far have kills with the 105 MKZ out to 150-160 yds. If the shot is where I want it they are DRT but even with hits that aren't great they don't go very far. Shot one in the forehead a while back at about 60 yards and brain pan was complete pudding. I think they are very affective!!

Damn sounds like a can't go wrong with either the 105 MKZ or the 120gr SST! Maybe I'll load up half MKZ and half SST and swap out mags on each hunt.

I try for 50 to 75yd shots only with my Six8 so I can get DRT or 20yds and drop. Can't wait to try these both out in 2 weeks!

At those ranges either one will work great. The MKZ has a lower opening speed and the fact that it has a higher velocity means you can get longer distances with it and the 105 MKZ will have a flatter trajectory.

To me another plus for a 85gr @ 3100 is that we see tons of coyotes while watching the vast peanut fields.
I can hold hair out to as far as I'm gonna try a shot at. Most likely 250yds. --- pruhdlr

I'm not a reloader but the factory 120 SSTs work extremely will in my 16" 6.8 and pretty dang well in my 12.5" 6.8. Both *** uppers/barrels.

I’m considering building an SBR with 12.5” barrel. What is the velocity out of the 12.5” with the factory 120 sst ?
