What have you shot a hog with?

Ok, I'm new here, but I get the general consensus of 6.8 is the norm, .308 is awesome, and 5.56 will work, if that's all you have. But let's dig a little deeper.

I collect evil black guns. The only blue and wood gun I think I own is a Winchester 101 20g for bird hunting.
When I decided to go hog hunting, my big question was, what should I take?

The guys that went with me, were as new to hog hunting as I was. We were going somewhere we had never been, to shoot something, we had never seen. Piece of cake. Hmmm, what should I take?

Have a question? Consult YouTube. I have watched so many videos of hog hunting, that I feel like I know Todd Huey personally. BTW, the boy is getting big Todd. :)

I have seen videos of hogs being shot with everything from .22 rim fires to .50 BMG. It didn't help. I left there with a desire to buy a .50 BMG.

My big dilemma was, I can't suppress a .30 caliber rifle. I screwed up and bought a 5.56 can instead of .30 cal, years ago. That rules out buying a "proper" hog killing gun, before the trip.

Here's where I embarrass myself. I filled out my 5320 form and brought 3 SBRs, 2 full size ARs, a .308 bolt gun, and only god knows how many pistols for a four day hunt. IMG_4111.PNG

In the end, I shot pigs with two guns. The 16" Colt with the thermal, and the 10.3" Colt with a Aimpoint. The little Colt was for walking up to them after they were down. Hey, I'm from Indiana, I was a little nervous. We don't have 200 pound German Shepards running loose up here, that want to eat your ass!

I brought an HK UMP in .45acp, thinking, hey, we will be in stands, it will be perfect for 50 yards. My first pig was from a stand at 50-60 yards, in daylight, but I brought the thermal that night. The following two nights, I brought the HK, but saw nothing before the sun set.

It's my one regret. I wanted a hog with a .45 SBR.

So what odd caliber or gun have you used.

I started out killing pigs with a AR in 5.56 shooting 65gr sierra gamekings. Mover up to shooting them in the day with my M1A in 7.62x51. My night time pig gun is a 6.8 spc. I carry a .45 ACP for my sidearm.

edit: I forgot for a year or more I used a bolt action .243 with a Gen 2+ Night Vision scope on it. My friends were amazed at how fast I could cycle the bolt and still stay on the pigs.

longbow. recurve, compound
probably more but the point is..... to have fun. I have settled on the 6.8spc for my go-to gun, seems to do everything w/o asking much in return.

For you guys that have used .45acp, how did it perform? Were you using pistols, and what kind of ammo did you go with?

I use a Kimber 1911 style handgun. Hollow points do not work very well. Seemed to me that the regular fmj's did a better job of killing the pigs.

.303 British — switched to .308 Bolt Action for better accuracy
.556 AR=15— switched to .308 AR-10 for better stopping power
9mm pistol— switched to .22 pistol for cheaper ammo & less noise but may eventually switch back

If you want to use 5.56 try Barnes 62gr TSX.

I've run it and mowed then down with it.

I had read the same about the hollow points. I just brought the FMJ for the .45

I use an AR 300 Blackout. Seems very effective. Setup with Pulsar Thermo.
I'm going to try an AR 9mm, close range
