Driveway Alarm

For those of us that primarily hunt over a feeder from a blind - I had read about some folks using a driveway alarm to alert the shooter of movement in the feeder pen, and thought this could allow me to nap or read while waiting for the inconsiderate sounders or individual hogs to come and play. I found an alarm from an old gas station and stretched it out across the pen. After watching several groups come in with no alarm, I think there is a problem. My hogs seem to be avoiding stepping on the small black hose to set of the ding - ding announcement. How do you train them to step on it? Lol.

Actually I purchased a unit off amazon that will handle a bunch of sensors and transmit a long ways. Installed it, picked the sound from some 32 possibilities, set the distance the sensor will work on, the delay between sensings, etc., and turned it loose. Works well! It went off yesterday morning while my son & I were hunting and a first glance it looked like a false alarm until the young bobcat moved again. Woke us up to a bunch of hogs. Alarm sound has 32 choices, volume is adjustable, or has a light that flashes if volume is turned off.
Guardline 1/4 Mile Long Range Wireless Driveway Alarm- Top Rated Outdoor Weatherproof Motion Sensor & Detector is what I am using.

I bought a cheap one on line and it worked well during the daylight hours but I had to set up a solar sensor light for it to work after dark. Some are designed to only pick up vehicles and not bodies, so have to read the instructions before purchasing.

Funny you should mention this. I used a cheap motion detector from harbor freight last night to get my first fox.

To be clear, my "blind" is the front porch of the house where I received my raisin', so my unit is on 120v with battery backup. Feeder is 60 yards from my seat on the porch. Alarm has been out for about 3 weeks now. Took the receiver inside and it worked well there also, and found out I can raise the kitchen window and kill from there. Handy and dandy!

Lol, that's exactly how I got my fox last night! Woke up to the alarm, opened the window, rested the gun on the window sill, and popped it.

I've used these. The range isn't great. For me it seems to reliably work at about half the specified distance (it seems good to about 100 yards, maybe slightly more) but there are places I hunt where that's good enough. I can sit downwind in my truck behind some brush & trees napping or just resting my eyes until something of interest shows up.
There are places too open for me to hide within working range, so it's not appropriate for every occasion, but it does have some good uses.

I saw a similar setup a few years ago on a Canadian coyote hunting show. Hunter had a sensor set up so that when a coyote triggered the alarm, a buzzer would go off in his hunting shack. That way, he could sleep through the night and be alerted when something showed up.

I am going to tell my wife I am not the only redneck! Mine was set up 40 yds from my back porch and I shot a hog, coyote and skunks from there. Kitchen window is my best rest also!

Just make sure to open the window. One of my ex-bosses has the same setup. Woke up one morning and saw a 12 pointer in the back yard. He was so excited that he forgot to put up the window before shooting. Blew out his window and did some damage to his hearing.

Been using one for years on the feeder that sits about 87 yds from the back window of our bunk house in OK. We could change the sensitivity by changing a couple of pin settings inside the unit.
Oddly enough, used the same unit when my youngest (10 at the time) had a brief stint sleep walking. If he came down the hall in the middle of the night (towards the stairs), alarm woke me and I could gently nudge him the other way.

Yeah, the guy who owns the property where I hunt the most actually used one as a driveway alarm!

He put it out so he'd know what time his teenage kids finally came home. No matter how quiet they tried to sneak into the house, he knew.

I"ll be at Harbor Freight in the AM to pick up several of these. Talking with the wife yeaterday . . . the more we talked, the more uses we found for a small, inexpensive unit of this type. Both around the house, and in the woods. --- pruhdlr

So far I'm looking through a thermal, so that should take care of forgetting to raise the window. Have not tried looking through the glass with it, but everyone says thermal doesn't work through glass.

I use my NV through the dining room windows but I have to put it up against the glass to see.

Got three of the units that are linked in the above post #4. There were $13.60 each at Harbor Freight.
The transmitter takes one 9v and the receiver takes three "C" cells.
Both units are small enough to carry hunting in a backpack. The receiver has 3 modes of operation. Hi,low, and off. The high is fairly loud and the low is pretty quiet. The little speaker is on the front of the unit and would be extremely easy to cover up to make even quieter.
When activated in hi or low, three red led's blink three times and the unit chimes three times. A piece of tape could be used across the three LEDs to darken them for hunting. The receiving unit can be powered by a 6V batt also.
My applicstion for one unit will be at my clubs food plot. I will mount it on my hog rubbing post looking out towards my barrel feeder. Sitting inside my shooting house I will not have to continuously scan with my firearm mounted thermal. Hopefully,it will alert me if there is something to be looked at.
The more I think about it,the more applications for this unit I can think of. --- pruhdlr
ADDED - - -> Forgot to mention, the sensor unit has one LED that blinks red when it senses IR. I will cover this LED before I use it in the woods.

Make sure you try them in the dark, mine will not work without at least a solar light.

I've used the ones from Harbor Freight, and they work in the dark. The range isn't great (as I noted above) but they serve a purpose.
