The data sheet indicates video with sound —
Thermal Imaging Sight Trail XP50 | PULSAR

It was my understanding that the hardware is in place on the scopes, and they were working on the software to enable the audio recording. I don't know if they just disabled it because they didn't like the way it performed, or they never enabled the functionality in the first place.
Since you can update the firmware via the wifi link with your phone, I would think it would be a simple process.
Although I'm leaning toward the new Trail XP50, I ain't buying one until somebody can prove that it works...

That's pretty much my sentiment. I expect to be in the market for a thermal scope in the 2nd half of this year, but I want to see some reports from the general public regarding what they think of it. I'm just not the Early Adopter type. OTOH, if it performs well, perhaps prices will drop on some of the competitive models.

It is not just software as you have to have a mic installed in the first place so they had to add one as an after thought I hope it works well

Since the Apex XD models have been discontinued and replaced with the new Apex XQ models....does anyone know what the difference in the features are between the new Apex XQ and the new Trail XQ models other than the ability to record on the trail models and roughly a $500 increase in price? I'd like to know what the additional $500 price gets you?

Don't the Trail models have a larger sensor chip?

The Trail XP's are 640 units.
The Trail XQ's are the 384 units.

Other than the built in recorder, the Trail models also have removable battery packs, and quick detachable mounts.
There may be some other differences, also.

Sorry, I misread your question.
The new "Apex XQ's" appear to be identical to the discontinued "Apex XD's". Although, they appear to actually be cheaper by a few hundred dollars.
The "LRF XQ's" have a built in laser rangefinder, which might explain a price difference. Otherwise, I'm not sure what the difference is
Disclaimer - I'm not a Pulsar expert. I've just been reading lots on them recently...

Optics Planet shows them "in stock" at $3,299. Not sure if that will be the standard, as I don't see anybody else stocking them yet.

Depends on the model FrankT

This year Pulsar reduced it's core line to 2 cores, The XQ core which is 384 and the XP core which is 640. These are both 17 micron cores as opposed to the 25 micron cores they had been using. The Apex line is only offered in XQ, the trail line is offered in both XQ and XP. Pulsar did keep 1 scope with the 25 micron core. It is called the Core RXQ. The purpose of this scope is to offer a budget option to compete with the lower cost options (This scope retails for $1900).

Pulsar had 2 models people refer to as Apex XD50's. They had the Apex XD50A which had a LCD screen and the Apex XD50 which had an amoled screen. The amoled screen is not as succeptable to low temp issues and is higher resolution. This year they decided to put amoled screens in all their products standard so no matter what you choose you will be getting the better screen type.

The more data the core presents to the processor, the better the image quality displayed in the eyepiece. So with same core in each scope, you must increase the objective size (There is a small portion due to focal zoom but we'll ignore that for now) to increase the amount of data presented to the processor. The Apex line had 3 models 38,50, and 75. These numbers referred to the objective size. Here's where it gets tricky, because Pulsar went to a 17 micron core, the core actually captures more data than it's 25 micron predecessor so the image quality is increased while holding the lens objective constant. This means the picture quality on the Apex XQ38 is more like the Apex XD50 and the Apex XQ50 is more like the XD75.

If anyone is a dealer please comment on the differences between the Apex line and the Trail line....The way I understand it, is that the trail line has all the bells and whistles but I am curious what those bells and whistles are that cost $500.

- Apex XQ38 (this is the direct replacement for the XD38A I have now. Has better sensor and better screen)
- Apex XQ38LRF (Same as above, with built in laser rangefinder)
- Apex XQ50
- Apex XQ50LRF
- Trail XQ30 (XQ models are 384 core
- Trail XQ38
- Trail XQ50
- Trail XP38 (XP models are 640 core)

The core RXQ is the one I told you about frank. The guy said MSRP of $1700 at SHOT show but he was with the Sightmark side so he must have been a little low on his numbers.

Thanks Todd, I thought so..was so hoping for an internal recorder but poor people can't get what they really want.

It's all priorities, if you stopped drinking beer, and smoking for a week or two you could afford the top of the line!
