For those using .308 what ammo are you using to put down your hogs. My buddies been using a Spitzer bullet and not impressed with them. It almost seems like it's over penetrating and blowing through like ball ammo.

I've thought about loading some and slowing the bullet down. Gimmie some suggestions. Figured .308 is so standard should be able to find box ammo that should take care of business.

Thanks.

Nosler has a 125 and 150 gr ballistic tip (hunting) bullet that should be great for hogs. I have used the 125 for deer for years with great results. It has a lot of shock value with lower recoil which would help with follow up shots. Think 6.8 with more powder.

165 SST works great for me. Doesn't seem to penetrate the really large ones, and still drops them good.

Hornady's 165 SST. Goes through the small ones, but does a bunch of damage along the way. It's dropped a few big ones, but still needs a couple of hits to close the sale. Best compromise bullet I think.

i used a 308 for many years. mostly 150gr corelokts, 150gr sst, 168gr blackhills bthp match and 168gr amax. i lost my share of hit hogs but a helluva lot of them went down for keeps or at least for a finishing shot. couldn't really tell any one bullet was better than the other. even the bthp was deadly, which surprised me. i'd try a few and see what's most accurate in my rifle and get after it. some may not offer earhole accuracy, but most everything offered sufficient hunting accuracy. for hogs, and especially for running hogs, any 30 caliber is hard to beat.

I reload and use 150 grain GameKings in both my 30-06 and .308 with great success. Always get pass through on deer, even big 240lbs South Dakota deer. Never really checked the pigs for pass through

I've used cheap soft point Hornady American Whitetail 150gr Interlocks to take a ton of pigs. Its cheap and deadly. I've always tried to hit them front shoulder to neck. Anywhere in that area has been devastating, the bullet doesn't always pass through on the 200 pounders but they almost always are DRT (even w/ a middle of the shoulder shot).

I've used 165 sst with good success. If you looking for box ammo remington's accutip line is a hornady sst with a gold tip. Just a side note in case you can't find a box of hornady. I get around 1-1.25 100 yard 5 shot groups with these.

I've also used 125 grain sierra pro hunters. I shot a 250 pounds hog in the shoulder. The bullet mushroomed well and only lost 10 grains. These were handle ads. I get .750 100 yard 5 shot groups with these and varget.

50 yard neck shot. 165 sst. 135 pound hog. 308 case for reference.

I use whatever FMJ's are the least expensive that historically has been PMC Bronze 147's, but also Wolf Polyformance. I just tried a box of 20 of the Wolf 140g soft point b/c it's so dang inexpensive at .36 cents/rd delivered. Ballistically out to 200 my POI hasn't changed or it's so small I can't tell. Have yet to put it in a hog yet, but even if it has crappy expansion I think it will likely work like every other .308 round I throw at them: well enough.

I've reload using Hornady 150 Interlocks in my bolt gun, and 180 BTSP in my AR-10 & my buddy's .30-06. I plan to consolidate on the 150's from now on. My original thinking was that I'd use the AR-10 for night hunting where the ranges would be shorter, and the heavier bullet would put them down faster. It seems that the 150 grain bullets work just fine, so I figure there's no need to inventory an extra bullet type. Using a .30 caliber rifle I've never felt a need for a fancy bullet.

We have obtained a bunch of the Remington 300BLK Hog Hammer pulls. They are a 130gr.,solid copper Barnes bullet that is "similar" to the Barnes 130gr TSX sold by Midway and others.
It is a flat based bullet with a longer ogive than the TSX but has a hollow cavity in the nose and opens to 4 pedals.
We shoot these at 2800fps using H4895 without adjustable gas,or following Hodgdons 60% rule can go quite a bit shower if we choose to,for the guns with adjustable gas.
These shoot great in my Busmaster 308/AR. Seems this would save beating up your expensive thermal equipment somewhat if you do choose to hunt with your 308. --- pruhdlr
