Anyone fish Richland Chambers?

I've fished it since the early 1990's. The fishing club I used to belong to had occasional tournaments there. Made a lot of good memories made. Later on I became friends with a rancher and his family and soon had permission to fish their ponds as well as creeks feeding RC. They own a nice ranch that borders the lake. Friend and I would launch a boat from the ranch and catch some big slabs. Just good, clean fun. He passed away and so then dad and I started going.

Every spring, dad and I headed out there for crappie. Some years were mighty lean, while others were overflowing. Hard to believe sometimes that dad can no longer fish. Came close to losing him to a heart problem the last time he was able to go. We had no idea his heart was bad, as his Dr gave him an all clear. Just so thankful he didn't die while out fishing. He was that close to death. Looking back it's scary considering the symptoms that were showing and I didn't recognize them.

After I insisted his primary care dr give dad a referral to a specialist, the new dr found the problem in a short amount of time. Dad survived the surgeries that followed, but he just isn't the same man we once knew. It has been hard for everyone to accept the changes. We still talk about all our fishing trips and am very thankful for the times we had together. Doubt I'll ever return to fish on the ranch, since dad is no longer able to. Wouldn't be any fun without him, that's for sure. Kind of strange how life changes.

M'be time to take the kids to Gramp's favorite fishing hole and tell them tales of Grand-dad's adventures with you? I hear ya though... I was 31 before I ever hunted with my dad. We had about 10 good seasons worth of hunting together before he wasn't able to any more. Best hunting years I've had were with him. We fished together a LOT as I was growing up, salmon fishing.

You're right about taking kids out there. Hadn't really thought about that. We (dad and I) tried planning a trip out of state to one of his fishing holes, but it would've been too much for him. This was before the health scare. So we went back to the ranch. That turned out to be a safer choice.

Yeah, a great way to prime the pump and get the kids familiar with something near/dear to his heart/experiences... gets 'em wanting to hear his tales of adventure of those areas and to glean tips for success. Great way to bolster his being needed in their lives.
