EvilBay loved me one year... I went on a frenzy buying bows. LOL This is one of 'em I snagged up. It's a Ben Pearson "Stallion" recurve... a 50# bow.

Nice shooting.Robin hood with a longbow, impressive. I have been making my own arrows out of cedar and ramen wood for ever. Started shooting some carbons a few years ago. I didn't realize that there were arrows that shot so straight. Still switch back and forth. Have that custom takedown and a 1 piece home job made from a chunk of red oak, shoots horribly but I have killed a few farm critters with it. Also have a High Country compound for the pop up blind. After hitting the upper limb on the roof of that blind too often just needed something short. Only reason I am using guns so much where I am the hogs are untrackable, it is too thick, and it is just throwing arrows away.

I really like cedars... an exgirlfriend was hell on 'em though. I'd let her shoot one of my bows and she kept bustin' my arrows up on things. At least they're cheaper than carbons... a pile of fun too... especially watchin' her shoot. LOL

I enjoy fletching my own arrows too. I'm definitely a feather man... not vanes.

So... what you end up with is this. A stave rough cut to the shape of a longbow. The riser is the bottom center, and the natural reflex of the stave pulls the ends away from the string... giving you more power from the strung bow as it's forced back the other direction... arcing against the natural pull of the wood. You end up with a faster arrow since power is applied all the way through until it leaves the string.

The final step in the stave prep process is to clamp it to the form to dry.

That's how you make a stave from a branch. The previous bow making link details how you take that stave and create the actual bow.
Amazing my man if this planet goes to hell I want to be hanging out with you and few others.

Sort of like the bumper sticker I saw today... "Where are we going? And, WHY am I in this hand basket?" I have LOTS of trading stock (when it comes to traditional bows). I quit counting at 30. LOL All different weight ranges too.

Just picked up a Hoyt Maxxis 35 in a trade. Killer bow. I am stoked. A few more days left of Spring Turkey here...

Did some hog hunting not too far from work last weekend. Managed to find their hideout under some pecan trees during the day. Went back later in the evening and shot a decent boar. Tracked him the next day but lost the trail. Maybe next time.

What kind of broadhead is that? I switched to Steel Force about 10 years ago for hogs and if recovered you get to use them many times with a quick touch up! I need to get back out with my longbow. It's just like you said though, recovery is tough, usually no blood trail.

I used Zwickeys forever but I shot a black bear in the shoulder and the arrow bounced back to me and the broadhead was bent over and all the spotwelds were busted open. That's when i started looking for a stronger broadhead, I have never been super accurate with a longbow like some people so I need every advantage I need.

Longbow is quite the challenge ! I'm not a great shot so I'll stick with compounds. ; )

Here are a couple skulls, I found an old picture on a thumb drive. The one on the left is my first javelina shot in Arizona with a Hoyt compound bow. I thought it was attacking me and I shot it out of self defense. Bow was before they had cams and I had no sights, just a bow and fingers. I killed a lot of stuff with that bow. I think it was bright blue with black limbs. lol
The other skull was my first Texas Hog with my longbow on the King Ranch. It was running past me at about 25 yds and I pickled it right in the boiler room but it ran like 200 yds. I found it about an hour later. Crazy extra tusks on it!IM000427.JPG
