Hello from Ft. Hood!

Hello!
I was excited when I got orders to Fort Hood because I had heard all the stories about how there are hogs everywhere down here. I'm originally from Western Montana and have been succsesful hunting elk, deer, ect.. I've been trying to hunt hogs now with my bow for 3-4 months (on public land) using bait, calls, reading advice, ect...with no luck at all. Pretty discouraging. It seems to me that all those rumors may have been somewhat exaggerated. I'm not a fan of paying for hunts. Has anyone had a similar experience? Am I missing something? Or does having private land make the difference?

Welcome to the fray. I'm headed to Butte at the end of the month, and then wandering on up to Boulder to do a little fly fishing and pick up my Mule Deer mount. I'll have a pasty in your honor while in Butte. Good luck with the quest.

Due to a serious lack of public land in that part of TX, you are considerably handicapped. Your best chance is to do a lot of leg work and cultivate some friendships with local land owners. Then ask if they know where you might kill some hogs. Good luck with the quest.

That's what I've been hearing, thanks for the feedback!

If I have time, I'll have to introduce my buddy to the world famous "Wop Chop" sammich too.

There's a new cooler company, based out of (I believe Bozeman) called Permafrost. Bought one last fall, it's supposed to be in direct competition to that other brand (which I won't name) that went anti-2A a while back. I can confirm these Permafrost units are top shelf. I had my deer cut/wrapped/frozen, stashed it in this new cooler with a 1lb. chunk of dry ice. Three days later when I was unloading the cooler into my freezer, everything was still frozen. I took it camping (twice) thus far this spring/summer. Both trips, stuffed it with cold goods from the store along with a sack of ice, and three days later, there was still ice in the bag. Add padlocks and it's certified "bear proof" too.

Wow, sounds like a good cooler! Are the prices similar? I got a couple Kodi thermoses that I love but that's about it. Sometimes I have a hard time justifying that price tag lol. I miss MT but I'll be headed up there for Christmas. They had a really hard winter this last year. Hopefully there is quite a bit of snow this year too

I have the 45qt unit, it was in the $270ish range? They have a divider between the halves, which slides out and can be used as a cutting board, the wire basket fits either half (side), the corner reinforcements have built in bottle openers, the handles are webbing with rubber grips molded in, and can be removed/replaced easily, the bung is tethered in place so it won't get lost. The one odd thing about them is there's a built in compass, but, it's imbedded into the rim and can only be viewed after opening the lid. "?" They come in about 4 different colors (mine is camo) and the color appears to be molded in/through. Has the usual fish measure scale molded into the lid as well.

Google Permafrost Coolers and the website comes up. They offer up 20qt to 110 qt in size. The big one has wheels.

Welcome to Texas. I recently moved to Montgomery county and from what I've seen you really need to make nice with some land owners. I now have to spots to hunt I may be able to make it out next weekend

I believe there are hunting opportunities on Ft Hood, at least at times. Shotgun only (slugs okay) from what I've heard. Daytime hunting anywhere during the summer months is tough, but you may be able to hunt at night some times. Check around on base. The Provost Marshall's office might be the place to start.

There are and I've hunted on fort hood. There are some really nice areas too. The only problem is that units are constantly training out there and you can't hunt in areas that have training going on (which is almost all of them, most of the time lol). I was able to get out this weekend which was nice. As far as shotgun, rifle, bow, different areas have different restrictions and guidelines

Good luck finding local landowners that will allow you to hunt hogs around Ft Hood. You really need to know somebody. I used to hunt coyotes and pigs on Ft Hood. I had luck with coyotes day and night but pretty tuff hunting pigs.

Thanks! Any areas in particular for pigs or coyotes?

I had good luck calling yotes of the western training areas along FM116. As for pigs, the area on the north side of cow house Creek as in feeds into Belton. However you can't hunt at night there anymore. Also along the open fields to the south side of cow house Creek to the west of Middle crossing around oak trees in the fall.

Thanks! I've scouted some of the areas above cow house creek and they look good!
